Josiah & Sarah Moore House a/k/a Villisca Axe Murder House, Villisca, IA ~ September 27, 2020
Investigators: Lisa Leyva, Peggy Casper, Stephanie Neal, Sarah Griswold, Samantha Belvoir, Mike Bane. Three other guests left before midnight.
The History: Sometime around midnight between Sunday, June 9, and Monday, June 10, 1912, a person or persons entered a small house in Villisca, Iowa, and using an ax bludgeoned to death eight people sleeping there, including two adults and six children aged 5 through 12. The killings became known as the “Villisca Axe Murders.” After nearly ten years of investigations, repeated grand jury hearings, a spectacular slander suit and murder trial, and numerous minor litigations and trials, the murders were never solved. Built originally in 1868, Josiah Moore purchased the property in 1903 and lived there with his family until the fateful night in 1912. The house has had 8 different owners since and was a rental property for many years with many different occupants until the Linns purchased the property in 1994.
NOTE: Despite almost every paranormal TV show stating so, no cigar or cigarette butts, or tobacco juice were found in the attic or elsewhere in the house, even though that rumor was spread all over Montgomery County in the years that followed the murder. [Sources: Coroner's inquest records and Grand Jury witnesses testimony.]
The Investigation: Coming soon.
Exterior and Interior of the Moore House. The Linns restored the house to the way it was in 1912, removing all electricity and the bathroom addition. There was no heat in the house and the temperature dropped inside to 52* the night we were there.
Alexander Majors House, Kansas City, MO ~ September 12, 2020
Investigators: Peggy Casper, Lisa Leyva, Stephanie Neal, Michelle Duckworth, Eric Duckworth, Alex Lavigne, Isaac Duckworth, Francesca Duckworth, Elias Duckworth, Jojo Duckworth, Samantha Belvoir, Brian Dietz, and others. Host: Christie Ayers, Haunted Rooms America.
The History: The Alexander Majors House was built in 1856 and served as both a family home and as the headquarters for Majors' successful freighting company. The Majors House was built facing westward, overlooking what was then the Kansas Territory and ran alongside a dirt road leading from Westport Landing to the original Santa Fe Trail. That dirt path is now known as State Line Road – the boundary between Kansas and Missouri. His house’s strategic location enabled him to conduct business on leased property in the Kansas Territory. On this leased property Majors had huge corrals, grazing lands, oxen pens, barns, and wagon and blacksmith shops. Family legend has it that Majors did this because goods in the Territory were not taxed. Originally, the Majors House had nine rooms and nine fireplaces—one in each room. The walls were originally plastered with white lime and hog-hair. The house’s main rooms consisted of an office, parlor, and dining room on the first floor, and three bedrooms and a family parlor on the second floor. Before the rear additions were constructed in the early 1900s, the Majors family’s kitchen was a detached outbuilding or lean-to. After his wife died, Mr. Majors moved his family to Nebraska and left the property to his oldest daughter, Rebecca and her husband, Samuel Poteet, the overseer of the business. The house stayed in the Majors family until 1904, when it was sold to the Ruhl family. The Ruhls made several additions to the house, including a large bay window on the south and a two-story addition that gave the house two additional rooms and an indoor kitchen. In 1924, the Majors farmstead was sold and divided up to make way for a new “suburban” housing development. The old mansion was then converted to a schoolhouse for 3 years. By the late 1920s, the Majors house was vacant and deteriorating. In 1930, Louisa Johnston, a great granddaughter of Alexander Majors, bought her family’s decrepit mansion from the school district for $2,500. She began to slowly restore the house. Louisa lived in the house for nearly 50 years. Upon her death in 1979, she willed the house to a long-time friend, architect Terry Chapman. As trustee of the Majors Historical Trust, Chapman undertook a major restoration of the house and opened it for tours in 1984.
